“An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.” — Nina Simone
My journey with gender and music research began in 2018, when I started asking a question that has stayed with me ever since: why are some voices heard while others go unnoticed? For my undergraduate thesis, I turned to women double bassists, players of an instrument still so often imagined in male hands, and their stories set me on this path.
That curiosity carried me into music cognition. In my master’s, I explored how the discourses we grow up with, and the biases in what we see, quietly shape the way women’s performances are judged.
Since then, I have kept investigating the presence and absence of women in the music industry, gathering data on who gets to play, be heard, and be recognized. In August 2026, I organized the 1st Symposium on Gender Studies in Music at UNESP, bringing together researchers and musicians working at the intersection of gender and music.
